BROOKSIDE DAIRY LTD, A TRUE PARTNER FOR FARMERS
Brookside Dairy Ltd has emerged a market leader in milk production in the region with fully fledged operations sales operations in Uganda and Tanzania.
In Kenya the country of its origin, Brookside Dairy is proud of a legacy of helping improve the standards of the livestock sector and particularly helping transform the lives of thousands of small-scale dairy farmers in Kenya.
Now marking 15 great years of existence, the company has formed a strong bond with Kenyan livestock farmers whose success is now a case study for other small-scale dairy farmers in the region.
The case of Elisha Chumo, a one time small-scale dairy farmer in Eldoret in Western Kenya best exemplifies the success of the Brookside Dairy farmers' program.
Before interacting with the Brookside Dairy Field Extension team in 2001, Elisha used to practice maize farming in his 100 acre farm and kept only a few cows for the family's daily milk needs.
Returns from the maize harvest which were always determined by the market forces of demand and supply were often distressing as he hardly made any worthwhile return on investment in the maize farming trade.
That was before Brookside introduced him to dairy farming. The company's field extension team advised Elisha on how to practice commercial dairy farming and invited him to several dairy training courses that helped broaden his knowledge in the field.
He converted his entire farm to dairy farming and increased his herd practicing the recommended cattle breeding and feeding and now talks with pride at being able to produce over 400 kgs of milk daily, from a mere 15 kgs in 2001.
Elisha confides that the returns from dairy farming are far greater than anything he's ever made during his days as a maize farmers and his farm is now a model farm for upcoming dairy farmers in the area.Elisha is just one among 80,000 small-scale dairy farmers throughout Kenya who have joined the Brookside farmers' program.
Right at the time of inception in 1993 Brookside Dairy embarked on a program of raising the standards of milk production in Kenya and targeted dairy farmers as key to the success of this program.
Throughout the years the company has invested heavily in dairy farming in Kenya establishing a formidable milk collection and processing infrastructure throughout Kenya and now the region as well as forging mutually beneficial partnerships with the farmers among other sector stakeholders.
OUR FORMULA TO HELPING FARMERS INCREASE MILK PRODUCTION
Farmers are at the very core of our operations. Our success, and indeed that of the Kenyan dairy sector is heavily dependent on the production of quality milk in the right quantities by our farmers.
For this reason, our primary responsibility has been to establish strong linkages with farmers.
Brookside Dairy Ltd has currently partnered with more than 80,000 small scale dairy farmers around the country whose business we support though a comprehensive field extension program through which farmers can expect the following;-
A) A guaranteed market for their milk-
Brookside Dairy boasts of the largest and most modern milk processing facilities in the country and dairy farmers can be assured that the company has the capacity to receive their milk. The company now sells its products throughout East Africa and the COMESA region and as far as the Middle East which further guarantees farmers of a market for their milk.
B) Empowerment through education.
Brookside Dairy offers regular training to farmers through dairy training courses and field meetings organized countrywide to help them practice better animal husbandry in order to maximize their milk production. Brookside Dairy has in the last three years conducted over 160 such trainings with an average attendance of 400 farmers per training.
Our team of Field Managers also regularly visits dairy farmers at their farms to educate them on animal health, animal feeding and nutrition, dairy animal judging and breeding, disease control and clean milk production, all which are central to better animal husbandry.
The climax of these trainings is the biennial Brookside Livestock Breeders Show & Sale where Kenya's finest livestock is displayed. The event attracts an average attendance of 15,000 participants who include small and large-scale farmers from Kenya and other countries who get an opportunity to interact, share experiences and market their breeds.
The show is jointly organized by representatives of the various livestock Breed Societies in Kenya and other stakeholders in the livestock sub-sector including Brookside Dairy, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development, the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, the Central Artificial Insemination Services and the Agricultural Society of Kenya. Among the key features of the show is cattle judging by International livestock judges.
