A further 180 million are at risk of iodine deficiency disorders. With iodized salt reaching about 70% of African households, these figures are presumably lower. With a focus on the prevention and control of micronutrient deficiencies, supplementation with vitamin A capsules has been successfully integrated into the National Immunization Days in 43 of 64 vitamin A-deficient countries. Iron/folate supplementation of pregnant women, which is government policy in almost all countries, has had very limited success. | | | Design Guide Lines for Process Plant (205 KB) This technical article highlights the basic concepts of legal system, standards and codes,
safety requirements, safe practice while designing a process plant. Importance of GMP
(Good Manufacturing Practices) and modular design concepts have been explained. Plant
personnel and plant designers are required to know these basic plant design criteria/guide
lines while designing a process plant. | | | Quality of HTST Sterilized Milk Products (113 KB) Old sterilization processes are reputed to give cooked taste and brown color to the end-products, those alterations of the original products being due to the intensity of the heat treatment.
The 2-stage HTST sterilization is an improved process where all these alterations have been suppressed. The purpose of this paper is to explain the reasons of this improvement and to give the result on a very sensitive product: cow milk. |
| Policy Papers | | | Factors Affecting Keeping the Quality of Heat-Treated Milk (100 KB) Pasteurised milk has a relatively short shelf life. In the USA it is generally expected to remain drinkable for 16 - 18 days or even longer. In European countries the expected shelf life is 10 to 14 days. In some countries, the expected shelf life is only 3 to 5 days, or even less. | | | Guidelines for the Preservation of Raw Milk by use of the Lactoperoxidase System (29 KB) Milk is an easily perishable raw material. Contaminating bacteria may multiply rapidly and render it
unsuitable for processing and/or unfit for human consumption. Bacterial growth can be retarded by
refrigeration, thereby slowing down the rate of deterioration. Under certain conditions refrigeration may not
be feasible due to economical and/or technical reasons.
| | | Policy Brief on EAC Customs Union (35 KB) The Launch of the EAC Customs Union on 31st December 2004 marked the
introduction of Common External tariffs and Internal Tariffs for Extra regional
imports and intra-regional trade, respectively.
Of common significance to dairy sectors of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania is
introduction of protective CET of 60%. This represents a reduction for Kenya
from 63%, an increase for Uganda and Tanzania from 25% and 50%
respectively.
Based on the principle of Asymmetry Uganda and Tanzania will charge tariffs
on Kenyan exports at rates of 10% and 25% reducing by 2% and 5% every year
for 5 years respectively. | | | Regional Dairy Trade Policy Paper (809 KB) The dairy sector is one of the critical sectors in COMESA and EAC, with high potential
for improving food security and welfare. Recent analysis provides clear evidence of
increasing demand for dairy products (and other foods of animal origin) in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and other developing regions of the world as a result of rapid population growth, urbanization and increasing purchasing power.
The analysis estimated that between 1993 and 2020, the annual demand for milk and dairy products in developing countries would grow at between 3.2% and 3.5% annually, implying that the demand will more than double over the period, from 168 million tonnes in 1993 to about 400 million tonnes in 2020. | | | World Market and trade (726 KB) Although the high prices of skimmed milk powder (SMP) experienced in 2007 were expected to draw
supplies onto the market, exports of SMP from major suppliers in 2008 are forecast to decline. In
principle, the key factors that fueled the sharp price increase of in 2007, i.e., drought in Australia, low
buffer stocks, depreciating dollar, and continued global economic growth, are expected to prevail for
much of 2008. |
